In 1897, a local ordinance changed the names of certain streets and avenues in what was then the Township of Kearny. Many present-day residents might be surprised to learn what their home addresses were back in the day.
For instance, Belgrove Drive was actually Grand Street, originally named for the many handsome homes that were being built there. Its name was later changed to reflect the title of our namesake General Philip Kearny’s stately mansion, Belle Grove.
Washington Avenue was originally Eilshemius Ave., so named because the stately mansion and estate of Kearny’s famous artist, Louis Eilshemius, was located at the present tract of land, which now includes our Board of Health and the Arlington Players Club. The street was renamed Washington Avenue, paying homage to Father John Washington, pastor of St. Stephen’s Church and one of the famed Four Chaplains.
Coppermine Road became Schuyler Avenue, representing Captain Arent Schuyler, the 18th-century settler whose copper mine brought fame and fortune to our immediate area. Wilson Avenue was originally Pomeroy Ave but was renamed in honor of John Wilson, Kearny’s first WWI casualty. Because there was a large public sentiment against “German-sounding” names post-WWI, Liberty Street became the new name of what started as Berlin Street.
Kearny’s street names collectively derive from our valued military history, ethnic heritage, and notable locals. Dukes Street was originally Cammeyer Street, changed in recognition of Dr. Howard Dukes, a beloved local physician. Today’s Maple Street was formerly Everett Street; Highland Avenue was Lynwood Street. Windsor Street was Hotchkiss. Surprisingly, present-day Beech Street was originally named Beach Street (a spelling which may still be spotted in town).
These are actually just a few of our local street name changes. To learn of others, you can visit the Town of Kearny Museum on Wednesday evenings 5-6:30 p.m., or Saturday mornings 10 a.m.-12 p.m. The museum closed during the summer season but is available for private visits or tours.
