Kearny creativity takes center stage at inaugural community art show

The Kearny Public Library is partnering with the Kearny Museum to present what is intended to become an annual event—the Kearnian Art Show. Conceived by Erin Martins and the Kearny Museum Committee, the exhibition will showcase artwork created by members of the local community.

Initial concerns about attracting sufficient interest from local artists were quickly dispelled. A call for submissions was issued at the end of 2025 to local high school students and adult residents, with an open submission period throughout January. The response was strong, with more than 40 local artists submitting work across a wide range of mediums, including photography, sculpture, painting, mixed media, digital art, and even local murals.

The exhibition highlights not only a diversity of artistic styles but also a broad cross-section of the community. Participating artists include Kearny High School students and teachers, a former Town Council member, and local seniors. Awards will be presented, including a $250 Best in Show prize generously funded by the Kearny Museum.

The public is encouraged to attend and support this community initiative. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when award winners—selected by members of the Museum Committee—will be announced. The artwork will remain on display the following week during the museum’s open hours, including the afternoon and evening of May 6 and Saturday, May 9. The May 9 showing will coincide with the second annual Historic Walking Tour, with additional details to be announced.

This event offers a unique opportunity to experience the creativity and talent within the Kearny community.
