A Whole Lot of Heart: Children’s Brunch Series Brings Community Together in Kearny

by Marisol Joven

On any given brunch day at Curiosity by Nest, located at 161 Midland Ave in Kearny, NJ, the scent of fluffy pancakes fills the air, children’s laughter echoes off the walls, and parents sip mimosas while soaking in a rare and beautiful moment: uninterrupted time together.

But this is not just brunch. It is love served family-style.

Since taking ownership in 2023, Jessica Barahona has transformed Curiosity by Nest into more than a restaurant. As a proud Latina business owner, she has built something deeply personal: a space where families feel at home, where strangers become friends, and where community is not just a word, but a lived experience.

There is a real need for places where families can truly connect, slow down, and simply be together. Jessica is not just offering her services; she is cultivating community. Every detail of the Children’s Brunch Series reflects that intention.

The brunches, which are planned to continue through 2026, were created with families in mind. In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, these two-hour themed gatherings are thoughtful and organized. They start on time, and within 30 minutes of arrival, families are enjoying a warm pancake breakfast. For children, the experience includes arts and crafts, bingo, interactive games, surprises, gifts, and even a Polaroid photo to capture the memory. For parents, there is coffee, mimosas, and something even more meaningful,  intentional time to connect with their children.

While Jessica works her magic in the kitchen, the brunch experience is led by Maribel and Marisol Joven, better known as the Mari Twins. As passionate community advocates, the twins share a common goal: creating a safe, fun, and welcoming environment where children feel seen, valued, and accepted. They fully embrace each theme, dressing in costumes that transform the intimate space into a world of imagination and joy.

And the special guests? They bring the wow factor. Past brunches have featured appearances by Batman, The Winick Brothers Magicians, and Miss Garden State. Mayor Carol Jean Doyle was also present for the beloved “Breakfast with Mrs. Claus,” showing just how impactful these gatherings have become within the Kearny community.
The space itself adds to the magic. With room for 30 to 40 guests, it feels less like a public event and more like a family get-together. Parents are genuinely appreciated for taking time out of their busy schedules to bring their bundles of joy. That effort is recognized and valued.

For those with a sweet tooth, Imagine Cookies by Maya offers beautifully crafted, themed cookies available for purchase. The cookies are delicious works of art that perfectly complement each brunch theme.

Looking ahead, spring brings exciting plans to host the brunches in the back garden, allowing for more guests, more laughter, and even more shared moments under the open sky.

The next Children’s Brunch is scheduled for March 28, and if past events are any indication, seats will fill quickly.

Curiosity by Nest is not simply serving meals, it is nourishing relationships. It is inspiring other Latina business owners, strengthening families, and reminding the community that sometimes the most meaningful connections are made around a breakfast table.

In Kearny, that table is waiting.
